About the Author
Ivan Doig was a third-generation Montanan and the author of fifteen previous books, including the bestselling The Bartender’s Tale and The Whistling Season and the classic memoir This House of Sky. He was a National Book Award finalist and received the Wallace Stegner Award, among many other honors. Doig lived in Seattle with his wife, Carol, for many years until his death.

Love, love, love this book. Chuckled my way through most of it & keep trying to interest others in it. Am I the only one who remembers the strange & glamorous characters on the "Dog Bus'? As well, the yearnings and curiosity of a young lad who reminds me of memories of my kid brothers? So Montana! So enjoyable!. Took a trip to Wisdom last year during river breakup. Unforgettable valley! Much Indian history there.
This is a really charming book. I finished it in just a few days. Comments: If you are of a certain age, that is under perhaps age 60/70, you might not get some of it. References to Lawrence Welk, Kate Smith, movie magazines, Mounds Bars, and on and on depicting life in the early 1950's.That said, I really enjoyed the journey of this young man. I grew to love Herman, his "sort of Uncle", or "gramps" as he called him in the end. And you just have to hate The Kate. The characters he and then they meet along the "dog bus" route are so very colorful. You feel like you are on the bus with him/them. The writing is enjoyable and laced with delightful humor. The story line, although short in actual time, is very interesting. One thing I found pretty impossible, is the coincidences along the way. That is him meeting someone on the first bus and then months later running into them in some bizarre place. And it happens more than once. A real stretch for me...... But, overall, a fun read....... I wish it could have a sequel but knowing the author passed away right after he finished it would dictate that we just have to use our imaginations......
not as good as bartenders tale, but it was good. I will miss him as an author I got to enjoy. He wrote in style that was more about the process than the result. I do enjoy fast moving books too but this style makes you appreciate the moment. Similar style to "snow falling on cedars"
The bus trip Montana to Manitowoc (1st 100 pages or so) will provide you with a smile or 2 per page in this coming of age trek for an 11 year old. Credit to the author for the ability to transfer '50s humor to the present day and there are even some real belly laughs. But Donel's adventure quickly becomes tiresome for the reader, and for the lengthy remainder of the book you will think you are reading an adult cartoon with very predictable characters, places and events and soon wonder, as I did, if you will able to finish the book. I did but could hardly wait to get through it. Well-written as are all of Doig's novels but read his others first unless you are diehard fan or can't get enough of the Montana cowboy scene. Way too long a book: I too grew up in the '50s, just like Donal, albeit in the East, but found his 11 year old going on 12 language and actions a bit too prudish to be credible.
What a delightful story. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading incredible stories far from the norm. Full of smiles.:
Set in 1951, Ivan Doig’s last novel covers several months in the life of Donal Cameron, a red-headed boy of twelve traveling to Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Donal’s parents died years before in an auto accident. Donal’s grandmother has been taking care of him but she has to have surgery so she’s sending him by greyhound bus to her sister Kate for the summer. Now what could go wrong with that? In a word — Plenty. After a short and unpleasant stay, Donal bugs out along with Kate’s live-in lover, a German named Herman Brinker who has suspicious citizenship credentials. Herman has always wanted to see the West and Donal willingly agrees to be his guide to all things Western including a rodeo, an indian powwow, camping in Yellowstone National Park, and landing jobs on a ranch near the town of Wisdom, Montana. Doig was born in 1939 in White Sulphur Springs, Montana. His dad was a ranch hand and his mother a ranch cook. When his mother died on his sixth birthday, Ivan was raised by his dad and his grandmother. Doig therefore was twelve years old in 1951, a neat bit of chronological coincidence leading me to believe that much of Donal’s experiences in this book are autobiographical. And that’s not a bad thing because Doig captures so much of the West’s culture, language, scenery and economic conditions that it’s rock-solid authentic. The people we meet along the way are real characters, a little bent one way or the other. Doig manages to throw in a surprise in most every chapter, many of which are quite pleasant and move the plot in unexpected directions. Ivan Doig passed away on April 9th of this year. Before this book, I had read eight of his earlier novels and his memoir titled This House of Sky. This last one is my favorite and I will miss him dearly.
This probably was my least favorite Doig book. The premise of the book was clever but it contained too many episodes that were predictable and or contrived. The characters on the bus were cliche as was the whole bus experience. IT really did not get interesting until the last bus ride to Wisdom and by then it was too late to save the book. There were a fair number of times where you had to suspend believe because there were way too many coincidences involved in the story. While It was not a waste of my time to read there are other Doig novels I would recommend before suggesting this one
