Dear reader,I bought this book as a follow-up to the author's book "There is a cure for Diabetes" which mentions Phase I and Phase I.5 of the diet, but doesn't adequately explore those topics. So I made this purchase, which expounds the topic of his "Phases". But this book starts off with "science" from the 1800s and early 1900s that he claims is his foundations upon which he built his theories. He also throws in some terms not found in the Oxford dictionary, like protits (this is not a misspelling), which he claims are really somatids, which he describes are the tiniest forms of life. Well somatids are not in any reliable source online and an anecdote describes them as energy particles that are still alive somehow. Well I thought it was time to look up this man on Wikipedia, and if you believe Wikipedia, he is not licensed to practice medicine anymore in a couple of states due to malpractice, and then I went to his website to put in my 2 cents on his blog and there's this text "Dr. Cousens is also recognized as “the fasting guru and detoxification expert†by the New York Times." and the Times link is live. So I clicked and the article really only mentions this as copied and pasted from their text: "The Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Patagonia, Ariz., run by Gabriel Cousens, a fasting guru" and that's it -- the rest of the article is devoid of the man and his "credentials." Given that his theories are based on a bad science "house of cards" collection of logical garbage and the lie found in the first credentials reference I saw on his website, I'm concluding the rest of his advice will not be worth my time. Wish I could get my money back. BUYER BEWARE.
This book is dry, but has been a lifesaver for me. My blood sugar was 181 when I started and was down to 100 in less than a month. My sister went to his clinic and she is now off her insulin pump. I cannot recommend this diet more. The book is so dry, but the message is essential, the recipes good. I recommend doing a search and getting his food chart pdf. I have it on my fridge.
Great recipes! Was afraid at first they would be healthy but not too tasty. NOT SO!!!! And easy to make. never thought using dill for example would taste so heavenly and have such a immediate and noticeable healthy effect. I am talking about the tomato soup recipe (there are several all with distinctly different flavors!) made with pine nuts and dill that can be made in under seven minutes! Tastes heavenly and was a great hit with my family, even my mom who is 94 and set in her ways. Try this book, it has several good and tasty recipes easy to make. It is by the same author of the book on how to cure diabetes and these recipes are labeled in such a way to show you how to incorporate them into the plan for addressing diabetes effectively. The recipes don't compromise optimal health benefits for the sake of taste, as in some raw food cook books, yet they taste wonderful! So definitely get this raw food cookbook because it keeps raw food interesting and tasty and the recipes are as pure and healthy as they get!!!
I love this "cookbook!" This was actually the second time I've purchased this after loaning out my first copy. The recipes are really good and this is a great first book for people interested in raw foods. It explains everything you need to know and is easy to understand and read.
Another WONDERFUL very informative book by Dr. Cousens who is one of the best authors of health and that "sciency" stuff that may not make sense to the non-biologist. He uses very supportive studies and brings it to lay-mens terms so we can all understand why it's important to eat healthy foods....not to mention how to make them taste REALLY great. You have to try some of these recipes, YUM!!!
This book, along with the LifeFood Recipe Book by the Judds, are my current bibles on raw foods. I think this book is better researched and more scientific than the LifeFood book, but I use recipes from both all the time. The one thing I'm not really sure about is the temperature for dehydrating raw foods. The LifeFood book won't allow anything dried at a temperature over 118 degrees, but this book, as well as the manufacturer of the Excalibur Dehydrator, which is supposed to be the best, say you can start with a higher temperature for several hours and then reduce it. Have tried both ways, I prefer starting with the higher temp both for the texture of the food as well as the reduced drying time. Other books I would recommend are: The Raw Food Detox Diet by Rose, Green for Life by Boutenko and Nourishing Traditions by Fallon. Although Nourishing Traditions is not a book about raw foods only, it is about natural foods and does have some raw food recipes as well as a wealth of information about food that I've never seen anywhere else. It's well worth having in your library if you are seriously concerned about the foods you eat or you don't intend to eat totally raw.
