From School Library Journal
Grade 2-6-An upbeat blend of science, history, and how-to instruction that will delight children and educators alike. Each chapter consists of numerous short articles combining historical and technical information on the design and construction of bridges with easy hands-on experiments. Contents range from analysis of the arch, beam, and suspension systems to the "care and feeding" of structures and reflections on bridges of the future. Interspersed throughout are simple projects involving building, measurement, or observation, such as testing the strength of varied paper shapes or constructing a Popsicle-stick truss bridge or-for literary types-writing bridge poems. The book concludes with a challenge for young minds to "think outside the box." Students wishing to access the projects quickly can consult the index under "activities." Sidebars such as "Learn the Lingo" and "How It Works" explain key terms and concepts. Others solicit problem-solving responses. Eye-catching photographs and cartoon illustrations in blue and orange tones abound; clear organization of text and unifying page borders create an attractive graphic package. The volume includes a list of notable bridges by state and country; those mentioned in the text are highlighted. This is a good resource for libraries and science centers and will be well thumbed by future generations of bridge builders. I love this book. I am a new STEM teacher and I was given STEM curriculum on bridging that cost the school thousands of dollars. I learned more and used more lesson in this $12 book. It has fun interactive ways to teach kids about bridging. Incorporates active play, crafts, history and bridge building techniques. I also liked that it talked about what engineers need to think about with design as well as what can go wrong over time and how to plan for that. Very informative!
This book makes excessive use of italic text. Whole pages are in italic. UGH! It is printed in either medium blue or orange text color. In some cases, the orange text is on a light orange background text box. This makes it difficult to read. There is no consistency to this text coloring scheme further degrading the reading experience.
Bought this as a gift for my 7 year old grandson and he loves it. He read it from cover to cover and frequently talks about building bridges. The book clearly sparked his imagination.
Used this book when I was teaching. Students loved the challenge and fun learning. Now one of my students is in college majoring in education. Purchased the book for her.
Got for my grandson, he loves bridges. Great book to aid him in how to build one.
We bought this for our nephew who is obsessed with roads/maps/highways. He was SO excited to get to build things. I was really overjoyed by his reaction.
My boys (age 7 and 6) and I really enjoy this book. The descriptions and history of each bridge is super detailed and has been a fun springboard for further discussions and the projects are also entertaining and very hands on. Perfect supplement to our homeschool curriculum.
This is a great book, filled with lots of hands-on activities. The activities are easy to do and the instructions are nice and clear, and, even better, the materials are things that we can find around the house. We've learned a lot about bridges with this book. Very fun.
