After three days and nights of hearing the animals' desperate struggles, five men took it upon themselves to rescue them. In this story, young Nicole's brothers, Aaron and Patrick, are part of the rescue team, and the child describes how the rescuers lead two of the dolphins to open water by breaking a path through the ice with their boat. Wearing a survival suit, Aaron supports the weakest and weariest one for hours before it regains its strength and is able to swim away. Then it returns a few times to thank the rescuers and "wink" at Nicole. Worded clearly and hauntingly, the drama that plays out in the water and in the hearts of the people will pull at heart strings. Striking, strong black, white, and gray-toned watercolor and collage art portrays the cold climate that the dolphins and rescuers endured. I think I might have enjoyed this better a few years ago, when I was more into dolphins. Now, knowing some of their behaviors in the wild, I'm less enamored. However, this book is more about the occasional kindness of humans, so I was at least neutral on it.A group of people defy the orders of the fish and wildlife service to help free some dolphins which have become trapped in ice, ending the book with a visible thank-you from the creatures. It's not particularly inspired, but it'll keep your kids interested through at least one read. If your kid loves dolphins, this could become a favorite. I'd say give it a try from your library, if they have it, but don't worry yourself if they don't. It's not a huge loss.
Beautiful graphics (made with cut paper) and a selfless storyline. The story and aesthetics will grow with your child and they are magical for adults who appreciate the effort of the individuals to save the dolphins.
